How to Access the Boot Menu, BIOS, and Recovery Screen

If your computer won’t start correctly or you need to change startup options, you can access the Boot Menu, BIOS setup, or the Recovery screen using the steps below.

To Access the BIOS Setup

  1. Turn off your computer completely.

  2. Turn it back on.

  3. As soon as you see the logo on the screen, press the ESC key repeatedly (about once per second).

  4. When the Startup Menu appears, select F10 – BIOS Setup.

Tip: In BIOS, you can check your system information, boot order, and hardware settings.

To Access the Boot Menu

  1. Turn off your computer.

  2. Turn it back on.

  3. As soon as it powers on, press the ESC key repeatedly until you see the Startup Menu.

  4. Press F9 to open the Boot Menu.

  5. Choose your boot device (for example, USB drive or hard disk) and press Enter.

Use this menu if you’re trying to start from a recovery USB or reinstall Windows.

To Access the Recovery Screen (System Repair Options)

If Windows isn’t starting properly, try the built-in recovery tools:

Option 1: Using F9

  1. Restart your computer.

  2. As soon as it starts booting up, press the F9 key repeatedly until the Recovery screen appears.

  3. Follow the on-screen options to repair, reset, or restore your PC.

Note: If F9 doesn’t work, make sure the system is fully restarted (not from Sleep or Hibernate) and try again.

Option 2: From Windows

  1. Go to Settings → System → Recovery.

  2. Under Advanced Startup, click Restart now.

  3. When the blue menu appears, select Troubleshoot → Advanced Options.

Notes

  • The ESC and F9 keys may vary slightly by model — if they don’t work, try tapping them right after pressing the power button.

  • If the system still won’t enter BIOS or Recovery, unplug any external devices and try again.
